Update 7/18/01: Here's a snapshot of Barnegat Lighthouse as we sailed by it on July 6th.

The Shipman's summer at the Jersey Shore on Long Beach Island. The walls of their bayside, contemporary home are like that of a gallery. They have a collection of large paintings of lighthouses. When they saw Summer Scenes, Long Beach Island at the LBI Museum Show in the fall of 2000, they asked if they could commission a similar piece.

The scene is typical of what we see when we sail on our sailboat Fandango past the Barnegat Lighthouse at the north end of Long Beach Island. I used the special quilting style of trapunto on the sand dunes, clouds, sea gulls, and sailboats.

Miniature clamshells collected near the Shipman's summer home adorn the sand. I heavily embroidered the dune grass and painted the water and shore edges with iridescent white acrylic so it sparkles in the light like sea surf. Tiny pearls and crystal beads are stitched on the sandbar in the foreground. At Ethyl's request, my husband Peter is built the custom walnut frame for this piece.
