Crescent Moon over Siesta Key is a tall, narrow bell-pull commissioned for a house in Sarasota, Florida. The client gave me the specific dimensions, a swatch of family room couch to match, and that it had to have a tassel at the bottom. As you can see from the image to the right, the colors of the swatch were deep blue, hunter green, burgundy, rose, and a hint of beige. She requested that I emphasize the blue; she's trying to accent it in the room. I had free range on the design. In fact she didn't know what the design or title was until it was delivered!

The top third is the evening sky. It graduates upward from twilight with flying geese to cloud level to tinkling stars with the crescent moon to deep indigo with a silvery comet.

The mid-section is a narrow strip of beach (for the beige), dune grasses, and wildflowers in burgundies and pinks. There's an appliquéd palm tree with coconuts swaying in the breeze. (Scroll down for detailed image.)

The bottom third is white foamy water at the shoreline that graduates to the deep speckled blues of the gulf at night. Appliquéd dolphins frolic in the waves. Like the clouds and tree, they are rounded out with extra batting to add dimension. (Scroll down for detailed image.)

The piece has machine quilted 'breezes' in the sky and 'waves' in the water. I then enhance the quilting with highlights of white, silver, and dark blue metallic thread. I work in 2" squares turned on the diamond. Given the 6" width limitation, every other row had 3 diamonds followed by a triangle, 2 diamonds, and a triangle. It was fun to work out the design given the specs of the project. I'm very pleased with the flow of the work. - CLV
