Taormina Pathway - acrylic painting 12"h x 12"w before framing © June 2005 CLV It had been a year since I worked on "Motmot" so I painted all three Sicily scenes in full detail. I started by stretching 100% cotton over my square quilt frames. |

Update: 11/30/05: Detail of embroidered foliage. |
![]() Stage 2: Some how I missed photographing Stage 1 of this pathway scene. You'll just have to imagine it without the Stage 2 hand quilting. The tree limbs are trapuntoed. |
Stage 3: After the stones of the path, the fence, and the leaves of the cactus were formed through quilting, I painted the next layer of detail. |
![]() Stage 4: The tree leaves and right side foliage are taking shape. Additional acrylic highlights and shadows and more quilting will complete it. |
Update: 10/21/05: Detail of embroidered french knot cactus 'prickers'. |

Stage 1: When I paint for the first time, I've got to keep the acrylic very watery. If it's too thick, it becomes too hard to push the needle through. |
Stage 2: With the fabric still soft and flexible, I'm able to manipulate the batting to form the various shapes while I quilt by hand. I would not be able to get this 3-D effect as easily if I machine quilted the piece. It takes me at least 5 minutes to quilt each cactus leaf and there much be a hundred in this small wall hanging. |
Update: 10/25/05: Stage 3: Here's a true 'artwork-in-progress' photo. Painting the individual cactus leaves. |
